honeymoons on a budget

A honeymoon is an irreplaceable intimate time with your new partner, after your wedding. Whether you have $2000 or $30,000 to spend, your budget should not restrict you from having an amazing time. You do not need to spend a small fortune to fulfill your needs of a dream honeymoon.

With some forward thinking, planning and being clever with your decisions you can end up having a fantastic honeymoon without breaking the bank.

Below are 8 great tips honeymoon saving ideas:

  • Avoid travelling during a school holiday. Prices are usually a lot higher during this time, and there is less availability.
  • Spend time shopping around for the best deal. Even though you book every other holiday with your local travel agent there are several larger branded travel agents that specialise in booking honeymoons, and may be able to offer you reduced rates, special deals or discounts. We recommend Holidays Please as a good honeymoon travel agent as they have access to all tour operators.
  • Do your homework. Be aware of any visa or airport taxes that you may have to pay on arrival at certain countries and be sure to include this fee in your budget before you travel.
  • Compromise and upgrade half way. If you are thinking of upgrading your seats on the plane to business class, save money by just doing this one way, maybe on the way out?
  • Down grade your room. The best part of your honeymoon will probably be spent exploring beautiful places outside the hotel, walking along sandy beaches or having romantic dinners. Although it’s important to have a nice bedroom, to save on a few dollars you don’t need to go for the most expensive suite in the hotel. You could still choose to stay at a superb hotel, but perhaps opt for the standard room rather than the over-priced honeymoon suite. This way you still have the luxury and first-class service included in staying at a magnificent hotel, but for a fraction of the price.
  • Book in advance. Generally travel agents can secure flight seats up to 11 months in advance. Not only does this guarantee you availability but leaves you with plenty of time to shop around for the cheapest and best deals on accommodation, excursions and packages.
  • Book online. See cost savings by booking online as you are effectively doing all the work yourself. Travel agents often charge a little extra for their time, but are a good source of knowledge. Use them for their information and take it with you to the nearest computer where you can book on line for cheaper!
  • Be sure to enquire about breakfast or all inclusive deals. Sometimes for a little bit of extra cash the breakfast can be included or an all inclusive offer might be available. This could be a good way of saving money depending on your chosen destination.

In terms of locality, there is no distance that is necessarily less expensive than the next. You could end up spending four times the amount of money to stay in a hotel in Australia, only a few hours away, compared to an exclusive hotel in Thailand which is a ten hour flight away, but seems like it should cost the earth. It's all down to personal choice. It’s important to discuss all of your options and find that perfect honeymoon that suits both your needs and desires. After all, a honeymoon should be a once in a lifetime experience, so be sure to make it as special as you are to each other.
