A bridesmaid is traditionally the sister of the bride or a close mate. Older bridesmaids may assist with the selecting of the dress and help with the preparations of the wedding, liaising closely with the chief bridesmaid and bride. Younger bridesmaids are not expected to have an active role in the planning process, however their mothers may choose to assist instead.
Plans should be discussed with the bride, groom, best man and chief bridesmaid.
Discuss the dress or outfit with the bride, particularly if being made. Establish
who will be paying for the outfit.
Attend the wedding rehearsal if requested.
Collect any hired clothing and accessories.
Ensure you have received any final instructions from the chief bridesmaid.
Get dressed and ensure you help any younger attendants get ready.
Leave for the ceremony 10 minutes prior to the bride.
Follow behind the chief bridesmaid or matron of honour up the aisle.
Depart the church after the chief bridesmaid.
Leave for the reception with the chief bridesmaid and any other bridesmaids.
Greet guests, standing in the receiving line, if necessary.
Hand out slices of the wedding cake to the guests.
Return any hired clothing and accessories.
