The groom and the best man select the ushers, who are traditionally brothers, close relatives or close mates of the bride and groom. As a rough guide, one usher for every 50 guests is suggested. The ushers are traditionally under the wing of the best man, and are made aware of their responsibilities as ushers of the wedding.
Make plans to purchase or hire clothes and establish who will be paying for them.
Final travel arrangements should be confirmed with the best man and any other ushers, including the time of arrival at the church or register office.
Receive the list of family and guests who should be personally escorted to their seats, from the best man.
Attend the wedding rehearsal if requested.
Have your hair cut.
Obtain some large umbrellas.
Collect any hired clothing and accessories.
Collect buttonholes and order of service sheets from the brides home.
Arrive at the church at least half an hour prior to the start of the ceremony.
Assist with car parking facilities.
Greet the guests, handing out the buttonholes, order of service sheets and maps
showing the route to the reception.
Ensure the officiant has order of service sheets for the bride and groom.
Ensure couples with young babies or children are seated near to the exit.
Escort the brides mother and appropriate guests to their seats.
Help the photographer.
Make sure that the church is tidy after the ceremony and for any property left by
guests or any unused order of service sheets.
Check that all guests have transport arranged to get to the reception.
Help out with car parking facilities.
Greet guests with drinks as they arrive if required.
Help any elderly or infirm guests.
Hired clothing and accessories should be returned.
