Glossary Of Wedding Invitation Terms

Selecting a wedding invitation, choosing the content, addressing and posting them are all things that can take time and effort. If you are not familiar with the terms involved in wedding invitations, this can add on more time and make the whole process confusing. Below is a glossary of terms associated with wedding invitations to assist on your way.

  • Blind Embossing: A design which is stamped without the use of ink or foil. The result is a raised design.
  • Calligraphy: A form of artistic writing, developed from old italic script. Traditionally this was done by hand, but today calligraphy machinery can be used. It is a flowing use of thick and thin lines to create beautiful writing.
  • Ceremony Program: This is a list detailing the order of ceremony including the songs and prayers, naming all of the attendants, speakers and musicians.
  • Ecru: A creamy shade of beige, commonly used for wedding invitations.
  • Envelope Linings: Often used on formal wedding invitations, these are small pieces of tissue.
  • French-Fold: Commonly used to fold invitations. A piece of paper folded, first vertically, then horizontally to produce a four page invitation, exposing the text.
  • Informals: This refers to informal stationery, commonly used for writing the thank you or other informal cards.
  • Pearlise: This is a finish, whereby some part of the invitation (usually the design) is given a shiny pearl-like finish to make it more striking.
  • Rain Cards: These are cards included in the wedding invitation, notifying guests of an alternative venue for the wedding if it happens to rain.
  • Short-Fold: This is when paper is folded, but not from the centre. The result being an invitation with a short fold and a longer back fold.
  • Vellum: Commonly used for wedding invitations. This paper is finely textured with a lustrous feeling.
